What should you expect from a visit to Cyprus? A travel writer recalls his first visit to the island and offers a glimpse of what he can expect.

As a frequent traveler, I find that there are certain habits that I have adopted as part of my travel routine. One of which is pulling out a map of the area and figuring out exactly where I’m going, before I go!

Taking a look at my map of Europe, I was surprised to know exactly where Cyprus is located. The third largest island in the Mediterranean is located at the eastern end of this great sea.

The island is not far off the coast of Turkey, with Syria, Lebanon and Israel close by. Although I had considered this to be a European island, it clearly also has a lot in common with the Middle East.

I chose to stay in the tourist center of Paphos, located on the western side of the island. Paphos has a reputation for being less lively than other resorts, not the least of which is Ayia Napa, which has the best nightlife on the island.

Paphos offers a better location for family holidays and for those looking for a quieter stay. My hotel was located on the outskirts of the city, which required a bus ride to the city center.

The city is centered around a good port. Sometimes it’s easy to forget that these places existed long before the tourist trade arrived.

In fact, it is clear that Cyprus is much more than modern hotels, bars and swimming pools. This is an island with a rich history.

I take a trip to the mountains to find out more about the real Cyprus. The amazing thing about these inland areas is that they have barely been touched by the development that seems to have taken over many coastal locations.

There is a slower pace of life, with locals sitting outside small bars and taverns. I find this to be, in many ways, a nicer side of the island.

Relaxing by the pool and enjoying the wonderful weather can make for a wonderful vacation, but I suggest you take the time to explore.

There is more to Cyprus than meets the eye.
