Toys for toddlers are particularly important as they are a wonderful tool to help you communicate with your child. As their language skills are still very underdeveloped at this stage and their attention span is limited, contact and communication while playing is extremely important to bonding with your young child. Therefore, it is very important to find suitable toys that help this communication.

Start by taking your toddler to toy stores, or sit him on your knees while you browse online toy store selections to see what types of toys appeal to him. Most young children love sounds and lights so this is definitely a good place to start, although make sure you enjoy the sounds too as you can listen to them for quite some time and it’s easy get impatient with a toy and remove it simply based on its sound.

Focus on giving your little one a sense of independence, the opportunity to use his imagination and make decisions on his own. Lego bricks (for the younger age group) are perfect for this.

Toys that are intended to educate and serve a purpose include playmats with numbers and letters, shapes, and colors. Many of these double as puzzles with removable pieces that are great for logic and hand-eye coordination.

Push and pull toys are great for many reasons: to learn what it takes to make a toy move in a certain direction, what force to exert to make it move a certain distance, what happens when you push or pull too hard, to improve spatial awareness and navigation skills.

And for children of parents who work with computers, a computer toy can provide an opportunity to emulate it and pretend to be adults.
