Committed for Better Business

Self-confidence means having faith in yourself. Believing that you can do something is powerful. Self-defeat comes from hearing the chatter of voices in your head telling you why you will fail. Just like a computer requires the right software to function at its optimum level, it needs to reprogram your mind to pass the tests.

First step, write a list of reasons why you will be successful, in other words why you will pass the test. Look at past successes in other areas and at other times for guidance. Mine are:

1. I work constantly.

2. I prepare early.

3. I am healthy, alert and aware.

4. I work methodically on study materials.

5. I deserve rewards for my efforts.

6. I am a great examiner.

7. I pass all the exams I prepare for.

8. I am smart.

9. I have an excellent reading comprehension.

10. My memory is excellent.

11. I am focused.

12. I am organized.

13. I invest in successful programs.

14. I take my studies seriously.

15. I dedicate time and effort to my studies.

Second step, post this list where you will be forced to see it at least twice a day. I posted my list in the bathroom.

Every morning and every night I read it over and over again. First for me, then out loud and finally one last time adding excitement. Each reading of the list strengthened my ability and belief in myself to be successful. It kept me motivated to study. It became a focal point in my day. It became a reminder of who I was, what I was capable of, and what I was ultimately going to achieve.

Third and final step, plan your course of study with a daily, weekly and monthly “to-do” list. Put your “to do” list next to your affirmation list. Check off the action steps every night. What you are reinforcing and being reminded of as you see your checklist change is why you deserve to be successful. Eventually you will cross the threshold of belief in your worth, your worth, and your ability to undertake and overcome any challenge. You will feel a change in your mind and attitude toward taking the test after thirty days of reading your list.

Using this method, I have passed three state bar exams, national scientific boards, and a host of other tests. I believe that anyone can become a great examiner or at least a passer by following these three easy steps.
