Malayalam is the language commonly spoken in the state. However, with interference from the outside world, it has resulted in a fascinating combination of various people, languages and cultures in the state, giving Kerala an urban / cosmopolitan perspective.
Geography
The state of Kerala is a narrow strip of land 560 km long, geographically located in the extreme south-west of India. This state is partially delimited by the states, Tamil Nadu (from the east) and Karnataka (from the north) and the Arabian Sea from the west (coastal side). Trivandrum is the capital of the state of Kerala. Ironically, although Kerala is only 1.18% of the total geographical area of India, its population is almost 3.43% of the country!
Districts in Kerala
There are 14 tax districts in the state of Kerala. The main ones among them are Trivandrum (Thiruvananthapuram), Kottayam, Aleppey (Alappuzha), Kochi (Cochin), Trichur (Thrishivaperur), Calicut (Kozhikode) and Kannur. Each district has its own unique culture and characteristics. They are also associated with history in one way or another. The government also has plans to increase the number of districts in Kerala.
Major religions in Kerala
Religion has played an important role in the development of Kerala culture over the years. The oldest of all the religions that is mainly followed in the state is Hinduism. It was in the later stages that other religions such as Christianity, Islam, Jews and Jains emerged in Kerala.

Agriculture is the main means of occupation of the people of Kerala. The plantations of cardamom, cashew, coconut, rubber, coffee, ginger, pepper, tea and arachca nut represent 40% of the total land. Kerala’s exotic spices have always attracted people (especially foreigners), for years now.
