Povidone-Iodine Nasal Spray
The use of povidone-iodine nasal wash or spray is widely used to treat COVID-19 infection. Researchers conducted a study that evaluated whether this antiseptic solution can reduce the viral load in patients with COVID-19. The study included 12 participants, including health care workers. The patients received a 1% solution in their nostrils four times a day. They also had to gargle with a 10% povidone-iodine solution four times a day for five days.
The study will examine the effectiveness of 1% iodine nasal spray protocol as a chemical prophylaxis for patients with COVID-19. Patients undergoing surgery will be given the spray before the procedure. Repeat testing will be performed at 2 weeks and at the time of onset of gastrointestinal or cardiopulmonary symptoms. The study will last approximately six weeks. The trial is scheduled to enroll a total of 392 participants.
The researchers will administer a pre-participation survey to assess the safety of povidone-iodine nasal wash. The participants will then use a povidone-iodine nasal rinse at lunchtime and a pre-made solution to gargle. The participants will complete questionnaires each day via REDCap to measure the efficacy of the treatment.

The researchers subsequently determined that the antibacterial agent did not reduce the rate of COVID-19.
