Since there are many uses for sandstone in the home (including flooring, wall coverings, fireplaces, and countertops), it is sometimes necessary to bond the stone to many different surfaces. Depending on the surface you are bonding the pavers to and the agent you want to use for the process, there are a number of different steps you will need to take to ensure that the sandstone will stay attached to the surface in the future.

Step 1: Thoroughly clean the surface of each stone to remove oils, dust, and other dirt. Start by brushing the sandstone with a wire or plastic brush, then clean it with a degreasing and water solution using an old rag. Finish by soaking the sandstone in water to ensure that its pores are sealed.

Step 2: Mix a cement mix by combining one part cement with three parts sand and adding water. Spread this mixture over the area where you will lay the pavers, using a straightedge to ensure the surface is level. As a side note, don’t use lime cement when working with sandstone, as it can be damaging.

Step 3 – Lay out the sandstone pavers in the desired pattern, using plastic spacers to define the gaps (if you want any). Once you’re done, use a trowel to fill these gaps with some additional cement and wipe off any excess mix.

Epoxy, Acrylic and Polyester Adhesives

Step 1 – Use a wire brush to rough down the back of the sandstone siding or pavers as this will increase its adhesive strength. Then thoroughly clean the stone to remove any oil, dust, and dirt that may have accumulated using the same process as the method above.

Step 2: Prepare the adhesive according to the instructions for the particular type you are using. Epoxies are made by mixing an epoxy resin with a hardening agent, then spreading the solution over the back of sandstone. You can then push the paver into place. Acrylic and polyester adhesives are loaded into a caulking gun, applied to the back of the sandstone, and set into position.

Step 3 – After you have applied the sandstone paver to your designated spot, be sure to hold it in place according to the time specifications provided by the manufacturer. This will ensure a strong and lasting bond.

When using any of these methods, you may want to wear protective clothing such as safety glasses, respirators, and gloves to ensure you are protected from the sharp edges of the stone and the poisonous substances in the adhesives.
